Strength + force
Rebuild the ability to produce and control force, including meaningful side-to-side differences where they matter.
PRODUCEReturn to Performance · Auckland
Rehabilitation gets you healthy. Return to Performance prepares you for the physical demands of training and competition again.
JP ATHLETIC works alongside the medical and rehabilitation team, progressively rebuilding the physical qualities sport still asks for.
The gap
An athlete can be pain-free, back running and medically cleared to progress — and still have physical work left before the demands of sport are fully restored.
That does not mean every athlete has the same deficits. It means strength, force, speed exposure, braking, change of direction, conditioning and training-load tolerance should be considered rather than assumed.
The performance demands
The return is built around the demands that matter for the athlete. These qualities are assessed and progressed where relevant — not forced into the same template for everyone.
Rebuild the ability to produce and control force, including meaningful side-to-side differences where they matter.
PRODUCERestore the capacity to create, absorb and redistribute force through jumping and landing tasks.
ABSORBProgress running volume from the athlete’s current level towards the work their sport requires.
BUILDReintroduce faster running progressively, including acceleration and high-speed exposure when appropriate.
EXPOSEPrepare the athlete to slow down, absorb force and control deceleration before adding more complex movement.
BRAKEProgress turning, cutting and repositioning towards the speed and unpredictability required in sport.
REDIRECTBuild the capacity to repeat high-intensity work rather than producing one good effort in isolation.
REPEATDevelop tolerance to the volume, intensity and density of the athlete’s return to full team training.
TOLERATETime is context. Not proof.
They do not tell you how much force the athlete can produce, how fast they have run, how they brake, what training load they tolerate or how they are responding to progression.
Objective information helps steer the physical return. It sits alongside the athlete’s training response and the guidance of the medical team.
The return pathway
This is a performance progression, not a fixed medical protocol. The sequence and emphasis change with the athlete, their sport and the guidance already in place.
Understand what the athlete has been cleared to do and work within the parameters set by their health team.
Build a picture of what the athlete can currently produce, tolerate and express physically.
Train the qualities that need development rather than adding complexity for its own sake.
Progress running, speed, braking, direction change and conditioning as the athlete earns each exposure.
Use performance information and training response to decide what is ready to progress next.
Close the gap between controlled preparation and the demands of team training and competition.
Collaboration
The surgeon, sports doctor and physiotherapist lead diagnosis, rehabilitation, clinical decisions and medical clearance.
Our role is to progressively rebuild the physical qualities required for training and competition, inside the guidance already in place.
JP ATHLETIC does not diagnose injury, provide medical treatment or medically clear athletes to return to sport.
Decision making
Performance testing can provide useful markers through the return process, but no single result decides readiness and no test replaces medical clearance.
Use objective outputs to understand current physical capability.
Track whether the athlete has actually experienced the speeds, volumes and movement demands required.
Progression has to account for how the athlete tolerates the training being added.
Return to Performance is physical preparation for sport. It does not replace physiotherapy, rehabilitation, medical treatment or the clearance decisions of your health professional.

If you have appropriate medical guidance in place and need to bridge the physical gap back to sport, start with an RTP enquiry.
Return to Performance / Investment
Return to Performance begins by understanding what the athlete can currently do and what their sport will demand next. The next step is built from that gap.
Establish current capability and the physical demands that still need to be rebuilt.

Return to Performance / Enquiry
Return to Performance sits between rehabilitation and the demands of sport. Give JP enough context to understand the current stage and whether this is the right next step.
Please do not send medical records, imaging or detailed diagnoses through this form. Coordination with the athlete's health professional can happen separately where appropriate.
