Representing Something Bigger

Representing Something Bigger

I wasn’t sure where the All Stars fixture fit in an already packed NRL schedule, but after being in that environment, it’s clear it needs to stay.

Being part of the Indigenous All Stars group leading into the game against the Māori All Stars gave a different perspective on high performance. This wasn’t just about preparing for a game. It was about identity, connection, and understanding exactly what you represent when you step into that jersey. The result ended in a draw, but that doesn’t come close to defining the week. The level, the intent, and what both sides stood for was obvious from the start.

Everything in camp had purpose. Meetings were sharp, sessions had intent, and there was a genuine connection across the group. For a lot of players, it was their first time really connecting with their culture in that way. It added weight to everything. It wasn’t just about getting ready to play, it was about representing something bigger than the individual and carrying that properly.

For me, being in that Indigenous environment for the first time and working alongside players like Nicho Hynes and Josh Addo-Carr stood out straight away. Not because of who they are, but how they go about it. There’s no on and off switch. That standard is just how they operate. The way they train, communicate, and carry themselves is consistent. No wasted reps, no wasted time. That’s what elite looks like in real terms.

The biggest takeaway was the culture. It didn’t need to be forced or constantly talked about because it was already there. You could see it in how the group connected, how players held each other accountable, and how everyone approached the week. It gave people the space to be themselves, but there was still a clear understanding of the level required. That’s where performance comes from.

The game itself reflected that. Physical, competitive, and played with intent. There was respect, but no one was giving anything away. Every moment had meaning because it wasn’t just about the individual, it was about representing something bigger than yourself.

Walking away from that week just reinforced what actually drives high performance. You can have all the structure and planning in place, but if there’s no connection to identity and purpose, you’re missing a key piece. When that’s right, everything else lifts with it.

That week showed exactly what that looks like.
